How to Build a 12-volt DC LED Light

An LED is a diode optimized to emit light. LEDs have many useful applications, such as in electronics, security, transportation and toys.



Because they are semiconductors, LEDs are delicate and prone to breakage if too much current runs through them. To avoid this problem, use them in combination with a resistor. The resistor's value may be calculated with Ohm's Law. The 12 volts may be generated with the use of batteries or a DC power supply. Electronic circuit trainers also may produce the needed voltage.

Instructions

Study how to calculate the value for the resistor R. Using Ohm's Law, the general formula is R = (Voltage Source -- LED Voltage) / LED Current. Note that R is the minimal resistance that should be used. It may be necessary to use a larger size.

Calculate the minimum value of R for a current of 20 milliamps. It is R is (12 V -- 1.8 V) / 0.020 = 510 ohms. This is not a standard resistance value. Use 560 ohms.


3.Build a series circuit with the 12-volt source, 560-ohm resistor and LED. Using jumper wires, attach one end of the resistor to the positive terminal of the power supply. Wire the resistor's other end to the positive side of the LED. To recall, the positive side usually has a longer lead than the negative one at the bottom. However, the negative lead is normally longer at the top, inside the plastic casing.

Connect the negative side of the LED to the power supply's ground. Turn the power supply on. The LED will light. If the LED is not bright enough, redo the calculations to use a current of 25 milliamps, in which case the resistor value that should be used is 470 ohms.



Tips & Warnings
Never use a resistor value that is below that of the calculated minimum value.

The LED light on the Blackberry Curve is an indicator light that will notify you when you receive new mail, receive new texts or voice mails, if your battery is low, if you are out of range, or if you are using the Bluetooth function. Depending on your model of BlackBerry Curve, your LED light will be red or blue. While the LED light can be advantageous is alerting you, it can also be draining on the battery as well as simply annoying. Fortunately, turning off the LED light on your BlackBerry Curve is a simple process.


Instructions

Press the "BlackBerry" key on your phone's keyboard.

Select the "Settings" icon.




3.Select "Options" from the menu.

Select the "Screen/Keyboard" option from the menu.

Scroll to the "LED Coverage Indicator" option and select "Off."

Press the "BlackBerry" key on your phone's keyboard.

Select the "Save" option from the menu.

Tips & Warnings
On some models of the BlackBerry Curve there will not be a "Settings" option but rather "Options."

Sometimes the BlackBerry Curve LED light will not turn off even if you have changed the LED settings. If this is the case, your phone may need to be reset. To do this, turn off your phone, remove the battery cover and then remove the battery. Wait 10 seconds before replacing the battery and turning your phone back on.
